Many like USF getting points because they had a stronger strength of schedule. Two of those teams were Miami and Alabama, who outscored The Bulls 92 to 31.
Throw these two out and San Jose State played tougher opponents.
Both the Spartans and the Bulls have hung around late in losses against better teams and then imploded at the end, appearing tired.
Some Considerations:
1) San Jose State loses their top receiver-Nick Nash, who's preparing for the draft (or just doesn't want to get hurt). He has more receiving yards than anyone in the country, but is still only projected as a late round draft pick. His backups are capable, and their running back-Chalk has lots of catches out of the backfield.
2) USF did not beat any team with a winning record this season.
3) For San Jose, you can throw out the numbers in their home game against UNLV. The weather was a mess.
4) For USF-Even if you discount their games against two top ranked teams, they had some of the worst defensive numbers in college football.
5) For San Jose- The firing of their present coach - Ken Niumatalolo from Navy was tasteless. He was the winningest coach in midshipmen history and relieved of his duty after a double overtime loss to Army. He's back, and if it matters, is a Hawaiian native. In addition, he replaces a coach-Brent Brennan who had some good players last season, but could never win a bowl game. Brennan went to Arizona and has taken that program to new lows.
